NGOs and International/Regional Institutions

E-mail Print PDF

International bodies have gradually learned to work better with NGOs. To enhance their own legitimacy, international organizations such as the UN, the World Bank and the IMF have opened their doors in different degrees to NGOs. This opening-up to civil society is still very uneven and incomplete.

NGOs and the UN

This section offers a comprehensive analysis of NGO participation at the United Nations. It includes sections on the role of NGOs, NGOs and main UN bodies, and NGO access to the UN.

NGOs and the Bretton Woods Institutions

This page analyzes the impact of World Bank funding and "partnerships" with NGOs. It also looks at NGOs interactions with and reactions to the IMF. An essay by GPF Director James Paul is featured here.

NGOs and the World Trade Organization

NGOs have led the citizens around the world to challenge the economic policies of the WTO as well as the Organization's closed meetings and lack of accountability.

NGOs and the European Union

NGOs work hard to influence EU decisions and affect EU policies.

NGOs and Other International Institutions

NGOs play an important role in guiding decisions of international and regional institutions, such as the OECD and the Asian Development Bank.
